Self-care is not a new concept, yet there are different means to apply it. World Health Organization (WHO) defines self-care as “the ability of individuals, families, and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and to cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a healthcare provider”. It addressed the aspects of body, mind, environment, spirit, community, emotions, finances, and work. In the process of self-care, the following areas may require attention: physical, professional, relational, emotional, psychological, and spiritual. Why is self-care important? Engaging in self-care has been clinically proven to reduce anxiety, depression, stress; improve concentration, minimize frustration, and improvement on total well-being. Self-care is not selfish as it is a means of restoring energy, promoting physical and emotional well-being, without depleting someone else’s.
